The Stories of San Marcos - Discovering Our Town's Roots

he Stories of San Marcos - Discovering Our Town's Roots.

SAN MARCOS, TEXAS – Mermaid Society SMTX partners with Lifelong Learning Organization of San Marcos to debut a storytelling speaker series at Root Cellar Bakery.

Whether a newly arrived resident of San Marcos or “an old-timer”, there is so much to know, value and love about our town! Starting Wednesday, April 11th the community is invited to take advantage of a rare opportunity to hear from community leaders of the Indigenous Cultures Institute, The Heritage Association of San Marcos, Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, Calaboose African American Museum and Ron Coley - Fountains of St. Mark, who will share compelling stories about San Marcos.

"We are excited about this programming and hope that many will take full advantage of this opportunity to learn about the rich history in San Marcos.” said July Moreno, Founder of Mermaid Society SMTX.

This new program is a cultural initiative of Mermaid Society and is coordinated by LifeLong Learning Organization of San Marcos. Its purpose is to create a platform for community engagement and the advancement of local cultural knowledge of our cities roots. The Stories of San Marcos is a multi -collaborative project designed to be a weekly story-telling series every Wednesday morning through October. Hear stories of the first people- the Coahuiltecans; African American life in early Texas; Hispanic heritage, history and heroes of our community; learn of historical sites, buildings and archives as well as traditions that beautify and enrich community life; and the story of the San Marcos cultural and scientific attraction-- the San Marcos River … all while having a great cup of coffee in downtown San Marcos at the Root Cellar Bakery!

“The opportunity to hear the stories of San Marcos from dedicated, insightful community members as well as get to meet them is not to be missed; however, having KZSM record them is terrific” added Marianne Reese, Founder and Director of the LifeLong Learning Organization of San Marcos.

KZSM community radio will be on-site to record the stories and will broadcast the presentations at a later time. The first presentation on April 11 will feature The Indigenous Cultures Institute. "Repatriation of Native American Ancestors" (Repatriation---will work). Presented by Dr. Mario Garza, elder of the Miakan-Garza Band. This event is free to the public. Seating is limited and on a first-come basis.

Join us at the Root Cellar Bakery at 142 N. LBJ Drive every Wednesday morning from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m. beginning April 11th.
