CELEBRATE DIVERSITY: OUR COMMON THREAD

The Downtown Association in partnership with the Dunbar Heritage Association, El Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos and the Indigenous Cultures Institute joined together in late 2020 to commission a mural of inspiration for the many cultures of San Marcos.

The mural, entitled “Celebrate Diversity: Our Common Thread,” was unveiled and dedicated on January 16, 2021 during a small, physically-distant ceremony. Click below to watch the unveiling and hear a description of the imagery and meaning behind the different aspects of the mural from the artist, Bob Jones. The mural also contains hidden, interactive features which are described in the video.

After you watch the unveiling, visit the site to view and interact with the mural. It is appropriately located on the prominent eastern wall of the Crossroads Building facing Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) Drive near its intersection with Martin Luther King (MLK) Drive in Downtown San Marcos, Texas.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

In keeping with the local San Marcos theme, the selected muralist is local treasure, Robert Jones.  Robert has lived in San Marcos since the 1970s.  His resume is impressive, having worked as a graphics specialist at the City of Austin, the Bob Bullock History Museum, and the Carver Museum.  Jones then served as curator at the Mexican American Cultural Arts Center in Austin prior to his retirement in 2018.  Jones is also a former member of the Calaboose board of directors.
